The 17th state in the USA, admitted on March 1, 1803.

While Ohio is known as the Buckeye State, historians are not completely sure of the nickname's origin. One tale traces it to Col. Ebenezer Sproat in 1788, and the nickname given to him by the natives of the region. Another source attributes it to the number of buckeye trees in Ohio, whose fruit, the buckeye, resemble the eye of the buck deer. And yet a third story refers to the presidency of Gen. William Henry Harrison in 1840, where the use of buckeye wood in cabins and walking sticks coined the term.
