New York

The 11th state in the USA, admitted on July 26, 1788.

New York is one of the original 13 states of the Federal Union. New York City became the first capital of the new nation, where President George Washington was inaugurated on April 30, 1789. In following years, New York's economic and industrial growth gave it the title of "The Empire State," an expression possibly originated by George Washington in 1784. In 1809, Robert Fulton's "North River Steamboat" was the first successful steam-propelled vessel and began a new era in transportation. New York City is a leading national center for art, music and literature. Some places to visit include The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Statue of Liberty and Times Square.
