The 32nd state in the USA, admitted on May 11, 1858.

Named from a Dakota Indian word which means "sky-tinted waters". Minnesota has a large number of fresh water recreational areas and has been dubbed "the land of 10,000 lakes" in modern times. Until recent decades, most residents of this state were of Germanic and Nordic descent. They developed both the agricultural industry and the reputation for progressive politics and civic involvement characteristic of the region. Medical research is also highly developed in Minnesota which is the home of the Mayo Clinic, the first open heart surgery, and the first bone marrow transplant. The nation's largest shopping mall, The Mall of America, dominates the city of Bloomington, covering an astounding 9.5 million square feet. It is the equivalent of 78 football fields.
