Maryland

The 7th state in the USA, admitted on April 28, 1788.

Maryland or "Land of Mary" honors Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I, King of Great Britain and Ireland, who established the colony in1632 for England's Roman Catholic minority. Maryland was the 7th state to ratify the U. S. Constitution. Charles Carroll, a wealthy planter, was signor the Declaration of Independence, a delegate to the Continental Congress and U. S. Senator for Maryland. Geography: Maryland is a Mid Atlantic state bordering with Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia to its south and west; Pennsylvania to its north; and Delaware to its east. 21% of the Maryland is bordered by water. Landmarks: a. U.S. Naval Academy, founded in 1845 at Annapolis, is the undergraduate college preparing young naval officers; b. Baltimore is home to Camden Yards Stadium, home of the Baltimore Orioles; and c. Pimlico Race Course, host of one race in horse racing's annual Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes.
