The name California originated from a mythical island ruled by a Spanish queen named Califia in the book, "Las Sergas de Esplandian" written in 1510 by Garcia Ordonez de Montalvo. James W. Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill on January 24th, 1848, which brought settlers from various areas to California, beginning the era known as the Gold Rush.
